A dumpster placed entirely on your own private driveway typically does not need a town permit. If it has to sit in the street or the public right-of-way, even briefly, Plymouth's Department of Public Works requires a permit — start with Town of Plymouth — Street Opening Permits and check with the DPW for current requirements. Requirements change, and Massachusetts leaves this to individual towns rather than to the county, so if your job is in Kingston, Duxbury, Carver or any of the other towns we serve, check with that town's own Department of Public Works rather than assuming Plymouth's process applies. This is a legal and safety issue as much as a practical one, and in Massachusetts it is set by a statewide list of waste disposal bans. Paint, fuel and oil, chemicals and solvents, lead-acid batteries, tires, medical waste and appliances that still need their refrigerant evacuated all have to stay out of an ordinary landfill load. Massachusetts was the first state in the country to ban cathode-ray tubes — old TV and monitor glass — from landfill and incineration, back in 2000, and that ban still stands, so electronics need a certified recycler or a local collection event. MassDEP publishes the current list, which also covers asphalt, brick and concrete, metals, wood waste, clean gypsum wallboard and, since late 2022, mattresses and textiles. Yard waste goes in its own box, and that box has a different exclusion list of its own: no treated or pressure-treated wood, no plastic planters, no fertilizers or chemicals, and no bagged household trash. Asbestos never goes in a container under any circumstances; it needs a licensed abatement contractor, and it is a genuine consideration in a town with this much older housing stock. Yes — storm cleanup is a steady part of our work here. This coastline has real history with it: in the Blizzard of 1978, Massachusetts recorded 54 deaths and roughly 2,500 homes seriously damaged, Plymouth County saw more than 40 inches of snow with gusts to 110 mph, and near Plymouth's own Long Beach the storm tide ran about 20 feet above normal and surged across Route 3A into the Eel River. Nothing on that scale happens often, but nor'easters still bring down limbs, strip shingles and load roofs every winter. What changes after a storm: we need a reasonably clear, level pad and safe truck access, since downed limbs or debris can block a delivery; storm debris often runs heavier and wetter than people expect, so tell us up front what you are loading; and a box in the street needs the same town sign-off as any other delivery. Often not, but it is the right question to ask, especially on the older, tighter streets around Plymouth Center and in the village cores of the towns nearby. A roll-off truck needs roughly 60 feet of clear space to work in, about 25 feet of overhead clearance while the box is tipping off, and a flat hard surface such as a driveway to set down on. A tight lot, low tree limbs, overhead service drops or on-street parking can eat into all three.
